Presidential Hopefuls, 46 Senators Vote to Stop Raid on Social Security Dollars

March 17th, 2006 by Max

Republican Sens. Burns, Chafee, Collins, Domenici, Lugar, Smith, Snowe, and Talent, as well as every Democrat Senator, voted last night to continue the raid on the Social Security tax surplus. Be sure to call them and let them know that was a bad vote!

So the Senate is now officially on the record on Social Security and they are telling us they want to keep spending surplus Social Security dollars (which they’re expecting until 2017 when more needs to be paid than will be raise) on whatever they feel like spending it on. Currently that includes the $3,000,000 the federal government gave to the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the $1,700,000 it paid for the International Fertilizer Development Center, bridges to nowhere, and the list goes on.

The good news is, we now know there are 46 Senators, including presidential hopefuls Allen, Brownback, McCain, Frist, willing to do something about Social Security, including stopping the raid and creating a “voluntary option to allow legal ownership of a portion of our benefits” or, as we like to call them, personal accounts. Be sure to call your Senator and offer your support if your Senator’s name is amount there 46:

I’m confused. Why did Domenici vote against this?

Here’s what it says on his website:
“Senator Domenici believes that we must insure that this program remains solvent for this and future generations. He has been an avid supporter of the Social Security “Lock Box” which will protect 100% of the Social Security surplus from other spending. He has also supported proposals that would allow younger workers to voluntarily contribute a portion of their payroll government taxes to individual accounts under their control.
