Missouri State Senator Nodler Blocking Cable Choice!
April 4th, 2006 by Brendan SteinhauserHere is the story:
Sen. Gary Nodler, a Joplin Republican and a former small cable company operator, has been a chief opponent of the bill. Nodler launched into a lengthy recitation of the history of cable TV, signaling that it could be a long night for proponents if they were determined to get the bill passed.

I believe I speak for the majority of low income families that stress through day to day life trying to get by what with the price of gas, food, medical coverage, prescription coverage and daily necessities. The last thing most of us want to do is stress over the fact that we can’t get more than two or three channels, that you can actually see, hear, etc., because the cable companies can charge whatever they want. When you can barely afford to put a roof over your head, food on the table and gas in your car to get back and forth to work it would be a nice luxury, if you will, to watch something on television that might be remotely of interest. Forget the idea of going to a movie. Who can afford that? My furnace quit working in December 2003. To this day I heat my house with two burners on my cook stove. It’s all I can do to keep propane in my tank. And you want to oppose Senate Bill 816??? Maybe you can afford to pay the price of cable, dish network, going to a movie, out to eat, etc. The majority of the people I know are thankful to eat and not freeze in the winter or die from heat in the summer. Why is it that the rich get all the breaks? Taxes, low interest on credit, people that bend over backward for them? The rich keep getting richer and the poor barely get by. And, FYI, I do not have internet. I go to a friends house that chose the internet over cable. Pass Senate Bill 816, for the good of ‘the people’!
Thank you.

Hello,
I am writing to say - PLEASE pass senate bill 816. I live in Kansas City, MO and pay approximatley $130 a month for cable television. I have family and friends that live in different parts of the state of Kansas - some less than 30 minutes from my home and they pay between $50- $60 a month for the same exact service that I have. How is it that the state of Kansas can offer their residents choice where cable television is concerned, but Missouri would rather have it’s residence pay on the higher end than giving the ability to have choice in OUR cable service. We have choice for phone service and I feel that it should be the same for cable television. I support SENATE BILL 816 and don’t even think this should be an issue of pass or don’t pass. The FAIR thing to do in this case would be to PASS SENATE BILL 816!!
THANK YOU

Pass Senate Bill 816 to break the monopoly that the cable companies have over the Missouri voters and taxpayers. It is the job of the Missouri Legislators to pass bills and/or laws to the benefit of Missouri citizens. It would be going against the benefit of the Missouri voters and taxpayers to not pass Senate Bill 816. We demand a choice of cable providers and it is the job of the Missouri Legislators to support what the voters and taxpayers want. It is a no-brainer that we want lower cable prices. No one in their right mind wants to pay higher prices. If Senate Bill 816 does not pass then there are some Missouri State Senators that better start looking for another job come election day.

I am from the East coast and since moving here to Missouri I have noticed NUMEROUS differences in technology, and television; one of them being the poor choice of cable television. The cable company that I am currently subscribing to has very poor service and if given a choice I would have left them long ago. I am currently a renting resident and can not get the luxiries of satellite cable. I am urgently requesting that you pass Senate Bill 816.
