Tax Freedom Day: April 26

April 12th, 2006 by Max

The Tax Foundation has released its annual Tax Freedom Day report for 2006.

Tax Freedom Day is the day that Americans have earned enough since January 1st to pay their taxes if every penny earned were turned over to the government. This year, Tax Freedom Day is April 26th. We will work until April 26th to pay our taxes, and have the 8 remaining months of the year to pay for everything else in our lives.

The pie cart in the study is particularly telling. It shows that this year we will work 116 days to pay taxes, but just 14 days to pay for clothing and accessories, 30 for food, 30 for transportation, and 22 for recreation.

$320 million of those dollars will help build the Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska, one of Congress’ most notorious earmarks, compliments of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK).
