Pork Projects Prevail in Military Spending

June 16th, 2006 by Peter Deery

The attacks of 9/11 ushered in a new type of war in which the conventional weapons and defense systems of the cold war past became obsolete. So why are our defense contractors still churning old style weapons used for these conventional tactics? It is merely another example of Congress fighting for pet projects that may not always be in synch with our priorities. Another reason is the excuse that cutting out dated defense programs in favor of a more modernized system is bad for the economy in that these programs are a huge source of jobs. With defense spending soaring and the top five defense contractors experiencing a 10% growth since 2001, Congress should give our military the tools it needs to accomplish it mission rather than use it as another source for wasteful pet projects.
