Socialist President Evo Morales suffers setback
July 5th, 2006 by Brendan SteinhauserThe Washington Times has the story.
Although Evo Morales’ rise to power in Bolivia was alarming, el presidente was not able to win control over the assembly rewriting the constitution.
President Evo Morales’ ambitious plans to empower Bolivia’s indigenous majority and boost state control over the economy suffered a setback yesterday when his party failed to win control of an assembly that will rewrite the constitution, unofficial preliminary results showed.
Morales, who has confiscated private property and is on his way to eviscerating economic freedom in Bolivia, said the rewrite is intended to “stop the discriminators, the exploiters, the haters toward peasant movements.”
On May 1st Morales “nationalized” the natural-gas industry. But what should we expect from a party called Movement Toward Socialism?
