Response to Victoria Advocate on GOP’s fiscal problems

August 21st, 2006 by Brendan Steinhauser

Here is the letter I sent the Victoria Advocate (Tx) in response to their editorial, “End GOP fiscal irresponsibility.”

This letter is in response to Monday’s editorial entitled “End GOP fiscal irresponsibility.”

While I disagree with the editor’s use of flawed static scoring regarding tax cuts, I do agree with the editor’s basic critique of the GOP.  As the fall elections approach conservatives need to remember what we stand for: lower taxes, less government and more freedom. Unfortunately most politicians in Washington, both Republicans and Democrats, are not legislating with these principles in mind.  Federal spending is out of control, the number of earmarks has skyrocketed, and the Republican majority cannot even cut taxes without adopting policies that destroy jobs, like minimum wage hikes.

Those candidates who want the support of conservatives this fall should campaign on bold ideas, and not sound bites. The conservative base wants to see drastic spending cuts, permanent repeal of the death tax, fundamental tax reform and the creation of personal retirement accounts for younger workers.

Conservatives are fed up with both parties and will simply not support candidates whose record in Congress is filled with bigger government and wasteful pork spending. We want to see real reform reminiscent of the Reagan Revolution and the Contract with America.

Good policy is good politics, and President Bush and the Republican majority should pay close attention if they want our support in the fall elections.
