California Voters to Decide on Huge Cigarette Tax Hike

September 12th, 2006 by Chris Kinnan

FreedomWorks California is springing to action on a proposed California tax hike. State leader Matt Schumsky writes: “In less than two months, Californians will vote on a new $2.60 per pack tax on cigarettes. The new tobacco tax would bring the total cigarette tax to $3.47 a pack. The ballot measure to increase taxes by more than 250 percent is called Proposition 86, or the Tobacco Tax Act.”

Take an active role in stopping this $2 billion regressive tax hike by joining the “No on 86” coalition at www.stop86.org. You can get more information on how this proposed tax hike will effect California’s fragile economic environment, hear what others around the state are saying, and watch the latest TV ads that expose the truth about Prop 86.

If I didn’t think smoking was a sin as I watch relatives slowly poison themselves, I’d be on your side.

I think tobacco products should be outrageously expensive - until we can make tobacco a fuel for cars and possibly a replacement for petroleum.
