Brownback supports the Flat Tax
January 10th, 2007 by Brendan SteinhauserSenator Sam Brownback, a 2008 Presidential hopeful, has made it clear where he stands on fundamental tax reform. He supports a flat tax that would abolish many of the loopholes and complexities that make the current system unfair and untenable.
The San Jose Mercury-News has the article here.
The last times that the idea of a flat tax received much attention were the Republican presidential primaries of 1996 and 2000, when multimillionaire publisher Steve Forbes made it the centerpiece of his expensive but fruitless campaigns.
So far, Brownback is the only 2008 major-party presidential candidate to embrace a flat tax.
FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe is quoted as saying,
“Special interests from the entire spectrum in Washington have carved out special favors for themselves in the tax code,” said Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, a Washington nonprofit that advocates a flat tax. “And that’s a burden on the middle class.”
Senator Brownback noted, “We need a flat tax instead of the dreadful, incomprehensible tax code we now have.
FreedomWorks praises Senator Brownback for his stance on this important issue, and hopes that other Presidential candidates will follow his example. We will be releasing the 2008 Presidential Candidate Survey in the coming weeks.

While I support the intent of the flat tax, it doesn’t go far enough to really address what is wrong with our ill-concieved tax code system. I have supported the flat income tax idea in the past but have grown from that starting point to embrace the idea of a flat sales tax. Specifically I have come to understand the need to scrap all federal taxation systems and replace them with the Fair Tax. I have studied the “white papers” section of the http://www.fairtax.org website to come to this conclusion. I suggest strongly that all FreedomWorks members take the time to address the far-reaching positive effects of the FairTax proposal.
