An excerpt:
Bill Virgin’s Feb. 15 column, “Debate could affect your cable TV bill,” was on the mark when describing a proposal before the Legislature that will expand consumer choice, innovation and cable competition.
Statewide cable franchise systems, such as the one proposed in Senate Bill 6003, detangle the local regulation web and streamline the process for new and current video competitors to enter the marketplace.
A new statewide system would replace the archaic regulations put in place when no competition existed between cable and telecommunications industries. The new system will meet the needs of the newer industries without penalizing the incumbent cable companies in Washington.
Washington lawmakers should open up the video franchise system to competition and choice, handing the remote control back to consumers.
