California Seeks Fed Disaster Aid for Freeway Accident

A truck accident took out an interstate overpass this weekend, and now California officials want U.S. taxpayers to pay for it out of federal “emergency disaster” funds, according to California Department of Transportation director Will Kempton as quoted in the New York Times. A single-truck accident is hardly a national disaster, no matter how bad the San Fran commute gets. California should pay to clean up its own accidents, and it certainly shouldn’t be able to tap federal disaster funds for an event that is clearly not national in scope or difficulty.
