Leftist Presidential Candidates’ Hypocrisy: More of the same
May 30th, 2007 by Matt HittleTownhall's Amanda Carpenter recently wrote a column detailing Democratic presidential hopefuls’ hypocrisy. Among the glaring examples was Barack Obama’s recent speech in Detroit. Obama harshly criticized the US auto industry for not being more fuel efficient and the American people for “spending their time investing in bigger, faster cars.” He then applauded Japan for its hybrid vehicles.
It seems as though Obama’s just another in a long line of Democrats who put down their own nation in favor of others (ie: Gore’s plan to close environmentally cleaner US factories in favor of environmentally dirtier Chinese ones).
Of course, when the Obama family goes home after a long day of stumping for his campaign, they ride in comfort: a Chrysler 300C with a V8 Hemi– 25 miles to a gallon.

B.O. needs to focus on the fact that it was THE CONGRESS who put import quotas on Japanese car companies. This had the effect, as it would in any business, that Japan exported larger, more luxurious, less fuel-efficient cars to the US in order to increase it’s profits under our CONGRESSIONALLY APPOINTED import quotas. What followed shortly thereafter was the advent of the fuel sucking SUV. Has THE CONGRESS looked back at the progress American automakers had made in a competitive enviroment, it might have instead solidified those gains in manadated fuel efficiency standards. If that would have been to “do nothing” for MoCs, they could have redirected tax revenue collected on energy and dumped it into alternative energy research and development. Congress could have also pushed for a reallocation of transportation monies towards public transportation systems, especially that of Light Rail Transit and Commuter Rail. Feasability based on Bus Rapid Transit and Commuter Bus programs could have provided evidence as to which such programs demonstrated a sufficient threshold for such public transportation investment. A muliplicity of issues could have been mitigated by this. Instead, Congress deemed the energy crisis over and returned to business as usual. B.O. instead plays the blame-game. How very changed, neo-politique and refreshing his approach!
