Action on Entitlement Reform
June 21st, 2007 by Peter DeeryGAO head David Walker has become so fed up with Washington’s runaway spending and lack of action on entitlement reform that he is leading a ‘wake up’ tour outside the beltway to bring to light these growing problems to voters. The goal is to get the presidential candidates to begin debating and discussing these issues more seriously. Sounds like what Dick Armey has been calling for all along. Walker made this issue a top priority after Congress ignored his concerns over the expensive prescription drug plan five years ago:
“People are on the beach having a beach party while you can see a tsunami of spending on the horizon. And you’ve got people saying, ‘party on,’ ” Walker said in an interview. “We’re headed for very, very rough seas, like we’ve never seen before in this country.”
Despite calls for balancing the budget and reducing the deficit, no candidate has thorougly addressed these issues or offered a clear plan.
Let’s hope that as the race narrows it candidates, entitlement reform comes to the forefront of the debate.
