Today’s Congress Daily reported that Senate Republicans

blocked the union-backed “card-check” bill that would have made it easier for workers to organize, derailing labor’s top priority for the year. Democrats fell nine votes short of the 60 needed to overcome Republican opposition, as the cloture motion failed on a 51-48 vote.

All Democrats who were voting supported the bill and one lonely Republican, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

Randel Johnson, the director of labor and immigration for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is quoted as saying “This is really about ‘08. Organized labor made this their top priority, and they failed. The business community has many priorities, and we still won.” The article says that Unions feel the fight is not over.

It also states that even if the bill had passed, President Bush had pledged a veto.

It looks like our Card Check counter-protest paid off. And I guess you could say it was worth all the pushing and shoving and pulling of my blonde locks.
