Club for Growth releases white paper on Fred Thompson

September 6th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

The Club for Growth just released its white paper on Fred Thompson’s economic record. The headline says Fred Thompson has a “generally pro-growth record.”

“Fred Thompson’s eight-year record is generally pro-growth with an excellent record on entitlement reform and school choice and a very good record on taxes, regulation, and trade,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “His belief in a limited federal government is demonstrated by his numerous votes against government intrusion in the private sector and increased federal spending. His fondness for Tennessee pork aside, Thompson consistently voted against increased spending and new government projects, at times, one of only a handful of senators to do so.”

The white paper provides an in-depth look at Thompson’s strengths and weaknesses, giving the Senator credit for supporting the flat tax and for sponsoring legislation for Social Security personal accounts at a time when few would touch the issue. At the same time, the white paper explores Thompson’s enigmatic record on tort reform and takes the southern Senator to task for his instrumental support of McCain-Feingold, questioning why his belief in limited government doesn’t extend to government’s regulation of political speech.

I am very new to the site but it seems to me that you guys are for less goverment, less taxes and more rights for the people. This amazes me that i have seen no support for Dr. Ron Paul seeing that his whole ren is on less taxes, less spending, less goverment and a free markets system for growth and change. I have followed many of the canidates over the last months finding ideals and stances that i didnt share with each of them. I was just thinking with a backing of 800,000 people someone would have said we should back the guy with all our beliefs. thanks all.

Kyle, I share your thoughts. I was perplexed too. In fact Ron Paul wiped out all the other candidates in their straw poll, yet they do not even put his face on the front page with the other candidates. Tancredo and John Edwards are there though. (??) Anyway, I figured out the mystery. Steve Forbes is on the board of this organization and he is a staunch supporter of Giuliani, who of course, is a staunch rival of Ron Paul. So, you will never see Ron Paul spoken well of on this web site. A crying shame.

Fred Thompson share all of FreedomWorks beliefs, and he will take the fight to the enemy. Dr. Paul will run back home (America) like a coward (no offence Dr. Paul). Yes, I know Fred Thompson support McCain-Feingold, but he has said that it did not work the way he thought it would (he’s leaning against now).

Fred Thompson is the only true conservative on the ticket that has clout and popularity. Forget the Ron Paul’s and the Huckabee’s. They don’t have the clout nor the conviction to stand by their position. I dont why conservatives and the christian base bash this man. Ask youself this: ” Are you got to settle with Guiliani and Romney.” Sure, Guilaini can win it all, but are you going to be able to sleep knowing you got a moderate in the oval office.

  5. Ernie Prigge Says:

Fred has the most potential to return to the Reagan doctrine of giving the US citizen the most freedom to make this country all that God intended when the founders wrote our constitution. I sincerely hope & pray he learned his lesson from McCain-Feingold, and that we aren’t going to hear “read my lips” from him. He needs to understand that if he wants the conservative vote, the sanctity of life, old & new, needs to become part of his governing objective.

Many of the Republican candidates are invoking Ronald Reagan, but Fred is the only one who’s policies and speeches actually embrace the Reagan tradition. He’s the only one (with an actual chance to get the nomination) who is talking about the 10th amendment, states’ rights, and shrinking the federal government. Everyone else seems to have a government program for everything. To paraphrase Mr. Reagan from his first innagural address: Government is not the solution to the problem, government IS the problem.
