Ron Paul beating Fred Thompson in New Hampshire?

October 25th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

According to National Review’s blog The Campaign Spot, Congressman Ron Paul is leading Senator Fred Thompson in New Hampshire. This is based on a poll from St. Anselm College’s Institute of Politics.

When I visited New Hampshire recently and talked with the libertarian crowd there, there was no doubt that Congressman Paul had a lot of support. This is, after all, the site of the Free State Project, and the state’s motto is “Live Free or Die.”

The surprising part of this poll is how poorly Thompson is doing, considering his superior name identification and months of anticipation.

  1. Joe V. Says:

The press in New Hampshire raked Thompson over the coals for skipping that state’s recent debate and announcing his candidacy on NBC … Since then, Thompson has focused his energies elsewhere — but I think at some point he’ll return and people there will focus on what he has to offer them: a Reagan-style small-government conservative who can win the nomination and the White House.

  2. Erik Says:

The first thing Reagan did when he became potus was bust the unions starting with the air traffic controllers and he then set the stage for the biggest transfer of wealth in the history of this country. The elimination of the social safety net for the poor by slashing federal programs for them and the elimination of high paying production jobs and training programs for the middle class all started in the early eighties. The so called trickle-down effect money never trickled down but was transferred to wall st and the military where it remains today. Reagan was not a small government conservative, he was a big government/big business elitist and that is exactly what Fred Thompson is. Please stop trying to rip-off Ron Pauls true Constitutional Conservative Platform.

  3. Trey Says:

Libertarians are generally anti-war like Ron Paul is, and Fred Thompson is more conservative. Why is this a suprise that libertarians are leaning towards Ron Paul? Although, libertarians should support Fred Thompson because of Federalism. I don’t take that poll seriously. Ron Paul is not going to get the REPUBLICAN nomination.

  4. Trey Says:

Well, said Joe V. Erik are we talking about the same Ronald Wilson Reagan? Where did you get that load of crap about Reagan’s presidency and policies.

  5. Greg Butko Says:

Ron Paul is the only candidate who can beat Shrillary Clinton. Besides that, he is the only candidate worth voting for. Ron Paul represents FREEDOM. The others stand for tyranny.

We need to reverse the course our government has been on for the last hundred years. Today’s dollar is worth less than four cents of the 1913 dollar. We no longer bother to declare wars, as the Constitution demands. Our lawless politicians, Democrat and Republican, are destroying our Bill or Rights, bleeding us dry and leading us into bankruptcy.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who will work to restore Constitutional government. The other candidates have nothing but contempt for the Constitution and the American people. A vote for anyone other than Ron Paul is a wasted vote.

Air traffic controllers took an oath promising NOT TO STRIKE! They got what the deserved. Protectionist, isolationist policies that force Americans to buy inferior products at the inflated prices necessary to pay overpaid, under motivated union employees are not what a free market is about. As for undeclared wars, war was declared on America long before 9/11 what is Ron Pauls answer to the very real threat posed by Radical Islam?

  7. Ben Kelly Says:

Ron Paul isn’t going to win anything He is a not case! He reminds me of that little jerk Ross P. There are only two conservatives in this race, Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter. Sounds like a great ticket to me!

  8. Scott Says:

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Arlene C and Erik. Reagan was a disaster, not only as POTUS, but also as Gov. of Calif.
I can see not one of the Republican canidates, except for Ron Paul and maybe Huckabee, that wouldn’t be four more years of the same. Hunter agrees too much with the Bush policies.

  9. Brendan Steinhauser Says:

Huckabee is a big government Republican. Hunter, while an American patriot, is a protectionist.

Thompson is probably the most conservative candidate who could win the nomination. Ron Paul’s record is pretty clear as a champion of liberty.

  10. Mr. Right Says:

Fred Thompson more conservative than Ron Paul???

That’s hilarious. What planet do you live on?

As for RP’s electability… If you people quit relying on FOX news as your sole source of information and quit believing that every freaking “scientific” poll is totally accurate, you’d realize that Ron Paul is much more electable.

He’s going to sweep the Libertarian, Independent, and Constitutionlist votes as well as tapping in to at least 20-25% of the GOP.

A Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter ticket would be a disaster for this country and would only serve to ultimately keep another Bush in office because there’s really no difference. The GOP will go downhill faster than ever unless we elect Ron Paul.

If we don’t, the GOP will experience a massive migration of voters into the Independent or Libertarian party. Congress will never be reclaimed if any of these neocons are elected.

  11. Trey Says:

Ron Paul’s economic freedom rhetoric sounds great, but like 95% of the time he’s voting with the liberal Democrats against good pro-growth legislation. So practically speaking, yes Fred Thompson is more conservative that Ron Paul. On foreign policy, Ron Paul is an idiot (not a conservative).

Ron Paul is not electable no matter what poll you look at.

As Fred Thompson supporter, who supports pro-freedom and liberty initiatives, I do not want Hunter as my Vice President much less my President. He is a protectionist who will screw the great economy that President Bush has created. Fred Thompson has been a huge support of freedom and liberty throughout his entire public career. And there is COMPLETE difference between Hunter and Thompson (don’t you dare compare Fred Thompson to Hunter).

A majority of Americans are for a strong national defense, economic freedom, and socially conservative (that is what a Neoconservative is). If you don’t like Neoconservatives, then you must be in complete difference from the majority of Americans.

    WISE UP!
