Mike Huckabee responds to John Fund

October 29th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

As I’ve been reporting on Freedom Talks, Mike Huckabee’s record has been questioned by rank-and-file conservatives. Today’s OpinionJournal.com has his response to columnist John Fund, who wrote a critical piece last week.

One of the lines that proves Fund’s point is this one from Huckabee,

“I believe that we must be good stewards of our environment and support many paths to reducing our emission of greenhouse gases, such as more nuclear power and alternative sources of clean energy. As part of our overall effort, I also support a cap and trade system, which has worked well for reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions.”

Huckabee obviously hasn’t read about the fraud other serious problems that the cap and trade system has caused in Europe. Note to Huckabee: If you want to be seen as a conservative, then don’t support liberal public policies.

The cap and trade thing is really the only problem I have with Huckabee. When compared with the glaring problems with the other candidates, this is small fries. This in no way “proves” the whole of John Fund’s ridiculous argument against Mike Huckabee.

The Club for Growth gave a fair assessment of Mike Huckabee and they said he spent and taxed. I think the Club for Growth did notice some tax cutting and praised him for it, but they did find that Huckabee did raise taxes.

“Cap and trade” is a big issue for me. Fred Thompson has a tax cutting record (Club for Growth saw it), and a cutting spending record (Club for Growth saw it). Fred Thompson also is against “cap and trade.” In that respect, Fred Thompson looks better to support.

Fred Thompson was in the senate and could pretty much vote anyway he wanted.

Mike Huckabee had to pass a budget in a state that was overrun with Democrats in office. Considering what he was up against, Mike did a fantastic job on spending. He was in a state which voted with 80 %+ to raise taxes to fix their roads (something that should have a tax levied for it) and improved the state’s infra structure.

Mike has done great thing in an executive office that a lesser man would not have held as a conservative. Placing the same template on Huckabee as a Senator is disingenuous at best, downright deceitful at worst.

Also, the Club for Growth was paid handsomely by an anonymous source to hack Mike Huckabee. I think that behavior is pretty cowardly.

I have to defend the Club for Growth here, chukmaty. They are a very principled group and have a history of supporting conservative candidates against moderates.

They took on Huckabee because they believe he is a moderate or liberal in disguise. Let’s look at the actual records to determine who is and isn’t conservative.

I’m not one to say that Huckabee is perfect. Far from it. But if you consider yourself at all fair-minded, I think you should check the Club for Growth’s facts before you buy into their accusations. Tax or Investment

There was a man that was called to be the president of a company. The company was 200 million dollars in debt and his companies’ assets in equipment were one billion dollars less than his fifty other competitors. He decided to borrow 505.1 million dollars to turn his company around. After ten years he was able to pay back 378 million dollars back on his investment loan. During the ten years he added one billion dollars in new equipment and improvements to his company. The most amazing accomplishment was that he left 844 million dollars in cash in the operating account at the bank. Would you say he was a successful president? Mike Huckabee was this man as Governor of Arkansas. He did not raise taxes; He invested to bring about change for the good of all the people of Arkansas.

Vote Mike Huckabee for President of the USA.
