McConnell Maneuvers for Permanent Internet Tax Ban Vote

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Chris Kinnan

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his allies are gamely continuing the fight for a vote on permanent extension of the internet tax moratorium.  It’s a smart move, since majorities in both chambers support a permanent extension but leadership is denying a vote.  Details at Sen. McConnell’s web site.

Big Business For Big Government

Brian Buetler reports on a Senate hearing about Lieberman-Warner climate bill:
Perhaps the most interesting question of the day came from Lieberman. He asked Beinecke and Kevin Anton, president of Alcoa Materials Management — both founding members of the United States Climate Action Partnership — what features of the bill they regarded as essential. What, he [...]

Ron Paul beating Fred Thompson in New Hampshire?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

According to National Review’s blog The Campaign Spot, Congressman Ron Paul is leading Senator Fred Thompson in New Hampshire. This is based on a poll from St. Anselm College’s Institute of Politics.
When I visited New Hampshire recently and talked with the libertarian crowd there, there was no doubt that Congressman Paul had a lot of [...]

Is Facebook Really Valued at $15 Billion?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Chris Kinnan

The news yesterday that Microsoft won the bidding war for an ownership slice in Facebook included a widely reported line:
The two companies said on Wednesday that Microsoft would pay $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake in Facebook. The investment values Facebook, which is three and a half years old and will bring in about [...]

One of These Things Is Not Like the Other

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Peter Suderman

Here’s President Bush out speaking at a recent event.  The message isn’t exactly subtle.

Now here’s the Washington Post this morning on how the administration is handling the ongonig S-CHIP brouhaha:
Bush administration officials yesterday voiced conciliation, suggesting the president could accept legislation that would expand the program by about $20 billion over five years, far bigger [...]

Science journal “Nature” admits Kyoto failed

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

Hat tip to Marc Morano on this one. Further evidence that the Nobel Peace Prize was more of a political stunt rather than a serious award. The case for carbon emissions is crumbling before Gore’s eyes.
It is time for a radical rethink on climate change, says a report in the journal Nature this week. [...]

Money Talks (Except When It’s Silenced)

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Peter Suderman

Advocates of campaign finance reform like to talk about “taking the money out of politics.”  But this is just silly on a number of levels.  For one thing, most of them would love to see campaigns financed publicly.  So they don’t really want to take money out of politics so much as take private, voluntarily [...]

Quin Hillyer’s case against Huckabee

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

This American Spectator piece by our fellow blogger Quin Hillyer is interesting. He claims that Mike Huckabee has a very shady past.
..the record in Arkansas suggests that he might be the wrong one to rally around.
[Huckabee] is a guy with a thin skin, a nasty vindictive streak, and a long history of imbroglios about [...]

Race-based government in Hawaii?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

The House passed the race-based “Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2007” yesterday.
As Jed Babbin at Human Events writes,
Under the Bureau of Indian Affairs definition of a tribe, the people who comprise it must exist as a community apart from society and have – from historical times – political influence over its members.  Under those criteria, Hawaiians [...]

Cato-at-Liberty on RomneyCare and HillaryCare

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

Michael Cannon over at Cato-at-Liberty points out that RomneyCare is not much better than HillaryCare. Below is an excerpt from his post.
Noting that Clinton would merely give Americans the choice of enrolling in Medicare or a similar government-run program, the Fact Checker concludes:
The claim that “Hillary care” is tantamount to “socialized medicine” does not stand [...]
