The Health-Care Lemon

November 7th, 2007 by Peter Suderman

Nick Gillespie at Reason points us to this great short by Stuart Browning on the perils of government-run health care.

What’s great about this is that Browning has done more than recap the basic problems with socialized medicine; he’s actually gone out and found the human side of the story, taking a (painful, I think) look at the personal costs that come when government gets put in charge of health care. Universal coverage advocates love to trot out personal anecdotes in service of their arguments — often times instead of them. But it should be remembered that liberals don’t have a monopoly on such stories. Government-run medicine has a deep, personal cost as well.

I am 78 years old and am very pleased that I have Medicare. My wife and I are also covered by United Health care. I am tired of hearing 45 million people are not covered. In Phoenix, Az we have a wonderful county hospital that people without insurance can go to. The care is so good that many people that have insurance and that can go to any hospital they choose want to go to the county hospital. I have a daughter (Mary Rice) that lives in Mesa, Az. She is a cardiac surgerical nurse and works at the heart hospital in Mesa, Az. She will tell you that she is surprised at how many people from Canada come down for the winter and have heart surgery. They take out insurance before they come down and have the surgery here. The reason is that they cannot get it done in Canada. They would have to wait anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the surgery. They are afraid they will die before they can have it done. I don’t think this type of thing would be welcomed in our country do you?

WE THE PEOPLE PAY ALL TAXES. REGARDLESS WHERE GOVERNMENT INITIALLY COLLECTS THE MONEY, ALL TAX MONEY ULTIMATELY COMES FROM US, THE PEOPLE. SINCE WE THE PEOPLE ARE THE ONE AND ONLY SOURCE OF ALL TAX REVENUE:
THERE SHOULD BE ONLY ONE TAX TO COLLECT ALL TAX REVENUE. IT SHOULD BE A SINGLE, SIMPLE, FAIR, DIRECT, GRADUATED, INDIVIDUAL, FULL-INCOME TAX LEVIED ON LIVING PERSONS FOR EACH LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT: ONE TAX AND DONE.
THE BEST THING THAT GOVERNMENT CAN DO TO HELP THE COUNTRY, THE PEOPLE, AND EVEN GOVERNMENT, IS TO REPEAL ALL OF THE MANY HUNDREDS, OR THOUSANDS OF EXISTING TAXES, FEES, AND CHARGES. THESE TAXES ARE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PRICE WE PAY FOR HEALTHCARE AND EVERYTHING ELSE, AND WHAT WE WOULD PAY IF THEY WERE REPEALED: 1/3 LESS. ELIMINATING THESE TAXES WILL REMOVE THEM FROM THE PRICE PAID FOR EVERYTHING BY EVERYONE, INCLUDING GOVERNMENT. THESE TAXES ARE THE FEDERAL DEFICIT. THESE TAXES ARE THE HIGH PRICE OF EVERYTHING. THESE TAX CUTS ARE SPENDING CUTS. EVERY TAX THAT IS ELIMINATED IS A TAX THAT WE THE PEOPLE NO LONGER HAVE TO PAY
THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE BENEFITS ONE TAX AND DONE WILL PROVIDE.

What you’re missing is that all of us who pay for health insurance have an unlegislated tax heaped on our coverage to pay for their free ride. Those who come through the door without the strength of a pre-negotiated fee by an insurer are ripped off big time. We complained about the Defense’s $400 toilet seat, what about the huge mark-ups on emergency services, the $200 aprin, etc.
