GOP debate is disappointing

December 12th, 2007 by Brendan Steinhauser

I am watching the Iowa GOP debate now on CNN. I must say, it has been pretty disappointing so far. Here are the lowlights.

1. Sen. McCain is promoting “cap and trade” to deal with “climate change.” He must think that it is okay to purposefully harm our economy and impose regressive taxes, which is exactly what the CBO says “cap and trade” would do.

2. Gov. Romney supports the big government “No Child Left Behind” program.

3. Rep. Hunter is, God bless him, arguing against free trade and continuing his China-bashing.

4. Alan Keyes - He is just embarrassing, and should not have been invited to the debate.

Okay, enough grumpiness. The candidates have said some good things, too.

1. Sen. McCain is talking about school choice.

2. Mayor Giuliani is coming around on the flat tax, it seems.

3. Rep. Tancredo noted that the Department of Education shouldn’t even exist.

4. Rep. Paul is continuing to talk about freedom

5. Sen. Thompson is talking about the looming fiscal crises of Social Security and Medicare.

The GOP’s slate of candidates for 2008 is just not looking very strong. If the GOP could only mix and match a little bit of each, they’d have a strong, conservative candidate.
