Romney panders to auto workers in Michigan

January 15th, 2008 by Brendan Steinhauser

Just when I thought I couldn’t be more disappointed with the GOP presidential nomination race, I read Mitt Romney’s comments about “bringing back” manufacturing jobs to Michigan.

The Washington Post reports,

As part of his plan, Romney said he would back spending an additional $20 billion over five years to federally fund research on energy, fuels, automotive technology and material sciences; modify a recently passed measure calling for U.S. vehicle fleets to average 35 miles per gallon by 2020; and ease automakers’ financial burden by expanding health-care coverage nationwide.

The poll-driven, “say anything to get votes” Romney has just laid out a big government policy proposal for the Michigan auto industry. Is anyone else noticing this?

At least Philip Klein at the American Spectator blog shares my concerns. He writes,

[Romney] sounded more like John Edwards than any kind of economic conservative. Romney seems to think that his business background qualifies him to micromanage the economy from the White House.

Exactly. Romney says Washington is “broken” and claims to be an outsider, but in the same breath he calls for more Washington intervention in the economy. Unbelievable. As Philip Klein asks, “Where did the economic conservatives go?”

That is why Fred Thompson is the best choice the Republican nomination, because overall he has been consistently conservative and he doesn’t pander. He sticks to his “First Principles.”

Guess it was good enuff for ole Mitt to win. He’s the new front-runner IMO. Don’t worry…you’ll be happy with his pro-business agenda soon enough…

Our manufacturing jobs are long gone from the USA though…we’re well into the “Third Wave” as Newt Gingrich and I would put it.

BTW…another win (#3) for Romney in NV. Are you guys shaking in your boots yet? :)

“First Principles” do not work, and we all know that! There is no reason to mention them!
