I think McCain is toast if Obama wins the nomination anyway, so this whole conversation could be pretty moot. (My prediction, and I'll make it here first, is that IF Obama wins the nomination, he will carry every state in the general election except Utah and, perhaps, North Dakota.) However, I'll play anyhow.

McCain doesn't need to appeal to independents, not really. He's got a lot of strength there, and no running mate will help him pull independent votes from Obama. If Clinton's the nominee, he'll have the independent vote anyway. What he needs is the pure conservative base that will become energized and work for the campaign.

McCain needs a guy in the Tom DeLay mold. One thought is Rick Santorum, though having lost his Senate seat the party might regard him as damaged goods. Newt Gingrich is another decent choice, particularly as a Cheney-esque attack dog. His appeal to social conservatives is pretty decent, and that wing of the Republican party is also pretty hostile to the Clintons. Institutional memory could help that equation, therefore.

But I think his best chance is to go young and inexperienced. To be honest, I think Jeff Flake would be a bold choice. He's new enough that he can establish his own bona fides with the Christianists and he's beloved by the party's Randians. He's also not a beltway guy, so McCain keeps his "maverick" image and also brings on someone who actually understands economics. My 2 cents.

McCain needs both indenpendents and conservatives to win. Huckabee doesn't give him this (in fact it repels the fiscal conservatives as well as independents). No, he can't choose Huckabee but will need to respond to him in some way. The big question is, what choice could appeal to both social conservsatives and independents?

I do like Mike but he might be a very hard sell as veep.I agree for all he has laid out in his message butit might not go over very well on both coasts.I think McCain will have to pick out a senate or congressmen to be his running mate.

McCain is 100% pro-life...he supported the AZ gay marriage ban but not the federal one...its certainly a reasonably conservative position to say the Constitution shouldn't be amended for something as non-federal as a definition of marriage.

These "conservatives" that lost did that because they ran horrible campaigns and not enuff voters voted for them, period. True, the media does love McCain, but that just allowed him to linger on long enuff to win in NH, which the other GOP candidates could have stopped if they wanted to or were smart enuff to.

You know, I could live with McCain as President, if it were Hillary vs. McCain or Obama vs. McCain. We needed Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney, but conservatives were idiots not to vote for one of them. But I will not vote for McCain if Huckabee is his running-mate.

I have a TINY bit of trust in McCain, but I have zero trust in Huckabee.

Since we conservatives don't have a conservative in this race anymore, the two conservatives were pushed out of the race by the media, we should join American Solutions (www.americansolutions.com) and help build the American Solutions Movement. Maybe we can influence the American Solutions Movement with the Freedom Agenda. Newt Gingrich says "Real Change Requires Real Change," well we know that "Real Change Requires Freedom."

"What he would do, though, is provoke the conservative establishment — something I don’t think McCain can afford to do."

I don't think your new buddy McCain will take well to bullying,
