"There are no serious economists or experts who believe that low wages in Mexico or China or India is the fundamental reason that American factories close down. And labor and environmental standards would do very little to change the reality of huge wage differentials between poor and rich countries’ workers."

Why are those factories closing down then if not to reap the benefits of paying workers in those other countries much lower wages and little to no benefits (like they do here)? You can't have really fair/free trade unless the playing field is level (that means having other counties with higher labor and environmental standards BTW)...otherwise, free trade is just a race to the bottom IMO.

Hmmm...this article seems awfully familiar...

Oh, yeah, I know why:

http://www.freedomtalks.org/2008/03/03/anti-trade-democrats/

It's the same article Brendan already blogged about! And he even quoted part of the same passage you did! And he had five sentences of commentary.

Bake-sale Brendan out-blogged you.
