Hand Out Across the Aisle

March 27th, 2008 by NSwift

The Boston Herald has this heartwarming story about how earmarks can bring old friends and different political parties together.  The apparently very philanthropic Democratic Congressman Bill Delahunt secured a $1.1 million earmark for his old friend, former  Republican Congressman  Amory Houghton, to protect Houghton’s expensive waterfront home from flooding.

This suddenly makes my own gifts of Starbucks cards or cds for a friend’s birthday seem rather pathetic,  but then I don’t have access to heaps and heaps of other people’s money.

Many of us up here in Massachusetts (I know several people in the community, on Boston’s South Shore, involved in this unwanted earmark) are astonished that this bipartisan boondoggle happened. Can someone with a better understanding of House Ethics or federal law, or both, than I certainly have tell us all how this is even legal — A Congressman from one state helps secure an earmark for his family’s property located in another state. If this is not illegal, we need to work to make it so.

    Thanks for any explanation.
