Congressman Paul Ryan showing leadership on entitlement reform

May 21st, 2008 by Brendan Steinhauser

Read this great editorial in the Wall Street Journal from today. Rep. Paul Ryan is one of the few congressmen showing leadership on entitlement reform. He should be commended for actually trying to do something that would reform the system, instead of ignoring the fiscal crisis created by the government.

By doing nothing, we are shackling our future with unsustainable debt and taxes.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the rest of government will consume nearly 40% of the economy by the time my three young children reach my age (38). This will require more than doubling the average tax burden of the past 40 years just to keep the government afloat. Continuing down this path will eventually strangle our economy.

Great article…Maybe someone will listen. Ryan and Sununu have repeatedly drafted bills that would reform Social Security through the use of tax-free personal accounts. I’m nearly the same age as Mr. Ryan and under the current system I’ll never see a nickel of what I’ve “invested”.

The problem is that the package almost has too much in it, which makes me believe that even if it does go anywhere, key pieces will be removed as bargaining chips, and it will become watered down.

There is no doubt that this is a step in the right direction though.

SS will be there in the future if people have the will to tell their political representatives to ensure that it remains solvent, period. Scare tactics are not necessary to accomplish this task.
