Huckabee’s “hope” is a “nope”

Thursday, January 31st, 2008 by Matt Hittle

Here’s an op-ed I published in my school’s newspaper yesterday.
—–
It all began in a place called Hope.
No, I’m not referring to that classic line by a certain incorrigible former president; rather, a guy who really wants Clinton’s old gig.
Mike Huckabee was born and raised in the same small burg - Hope, Arkansas - as […]

Rebates are not stimulus

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008 by Matt Hittle

I think that the presidential candidates, as well as the Bush Administration, should take a few econ classes. At the very least though, they should read the Wall Street Journal.
If they looked today, they’d find Alan Reynolds’ great op-ed about their stimulus packages.
Reynolds discusses the fact that the economic stimulus packages proffered both by President […]

Friedman on greed

Sunday, January 6th, 2008 by Matt Hittle

In keeping with the Milton Friedman posts here at FreedomTalks, I thought I’d post this fascinating video.
It’s Uncle Milty on Donahue back in the 1970s defending capitalism. More importantly, however, he stands up for the concept which Adam Smith identified so eloquently in An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations- […]

My caucus night in Iowa: a diary

Friday, January 4th, 2008 by Matt Hittle

Last night, I showed up at East High School in Sioux City, Iowa for the Republican caucuses with Milton Friedman’s book “Free to Choose” under my arm. I was excited to be attending my second caucus.
We filed into the gymnasium with our blue paper ballots and heard a few words from representatives of the candidates. […]

More on Huckabee

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 by Matt Hittle

Today, the Drudge Report linked a short YouTube clip of ultraliberal Susan Estrich discussing the Democrats’ view of a Huckabee nomination.
Huckabee could win tomorrow. Huckabee is the Democrats’ dream…If the Republicans nominate Huckabee, honey, I’m dancing at the inaugural ball.
It’s a bad sign when the other party approves of your frontrunner.

Tonight’s the night

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 by Matt Hittle

Tonight is a very important night. Not only will the endless TV and radio commercials finally stop, but I get to caucus! I’ll show up early to East High School in Sioux City- still undecided- to join in the democratic process. I’ll let the campaign members try to convince me. If they don’t, I’m caucusing […]

Lobbyists: Not as bad as the Dems say

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008 by Matt Hittle

Caucus season is fun in Iowa. That is, unless you are trying to watch television. One can’t watch Saturday Night Live without seeing a “floating cross” or hearing the meaningless mantra “change, change, change.”
It follows that last night, in between push-polling calls, I saw several commercials from Democratic candidates decrying lobbyists and their “grip” on […]

OH, THAT ZANY UN

Thursday, December 6th, 2007 by Matt Hittle

The UN is meeting in Bali this week. Can anyone say pina coladas and sunbathing?!
Seriously, though, check THIS out:
The delegates each will produce an average 4.07 metric tons of carbon dioxide, or CO2, to reach the resort island 950 kilometers (600 miles) from Jakarta, according to estimates e- mailed to Bloomberg by the UN […]

Made in China: Free trade helps all

Monday, November 26th, 2007 by Matt Hittle

Did you grow your own sugar? Did you build your own laptop? Maybe, but odds are you didn’t. You almost certainly traded money for sugar and your laptop.
We buy things because we don’t have the time, resources or know-how to make them ourselves. Heck, sometimes, we’re just too lazy, (thank God for Domino’s Pizza). […]

A Closer Look…

Sunday, November 4th, 2007 by Matt Hittle

In today’s New York Times, Harvard University economics professor-and author of my university’s economics textbooks, Greg Mankiw, discusses the Left’s most commonly used data to support their desire for socialized health care, and why they’re misleading.
Mankiw discusses 3 main statements that could be heard on any Hillary Clinton TV spot:

STATEMENT 1: The United […]
