Why is it suddenly so fashionable and so conservative for member of Congress to take the position that every bureaucrat in Washington knows more about their state and their district than they do? That is precisely what it means when a Congressman takes a "no earmark" pledge. They are saying that budget decisions that affect their constituents should be made by bureaucrats because that is the practical effect of such a position. In doing so they are abdicating their Constitutional responsiblity as the branch of government that has the power of the purse. Senator Hutchison knows she knows more about Texas needs than some GS-12 budget analyst or some unelected Deputy Assistant Secretary in charge of Presidential pork. Texas taxpayers receive back less for their taxdollars in terms of highway funding than taxpayers in any other state. Earmarks are one way to level that playing field. Texas voters should demand their representatives not take any more anti-constituent, pro-bureaucrat pledges.

Ah, from 1980 to 1986, when oil prices went down & U.S. oil production went up (imports also went down, but I suspect that those days are over), and all this happened during the Iran hostage crisis, the Iran-Iraq War (which we aided Iraq in), and a boycot of Libyan oil!

"The facts...they burn!!" :)

I cover oil stocks -- actually demand in the US already is falling, maybe 1%, and probably will fall faster as people conserve more. But unlike in the '70s, when US demand drove global demand, today it's emerging markets demand driving global demand. And pump prices in most important emerging markets are lower than in the US. So yeah, I agree, prices might keep rising until enough demand in enough places is destroyed.

A little datapoint on oil co profits: in the 1q, the oil price was up about 66% vs the 1q07...but net earnings for most International Oil Companies (Exxon, Shell etc) were up only 17-31%.

What to do about high oil prices? First get Bush out of office which be done until next next January. When his time is up America should nationalize the oil industry in our country, this is not to far fetched as the country is at war that our leaders have got us into through lies, and more lies and standing on an aircraft carrier and declair victory. Just What in the world was He thinking. I never read that any Iraq people were on
any of the Planes that bomb us on 911. Of the 19 people that bombed us on 911 were not from IRAQ , but from Saudi Arabia. I guess We won't know until the present administration gets out of office just how many of our Generals and other of our officers were driven out of office because this war. All I can say is the notion that we are in a recession now is
is not true because we are in a depression at this time as we have at the Helm of the country are persons, Congressmen and Senators who know nothing about running our country

MY VOTE

With the current state of affairs - there is no way that I could vote for a candidate of either national party - EXCEPT - if either party puts forth a candidate that is so repugnant - that I have to vote for its (his/her) opponent - in my self-defense.

Cutting into a company's HUGE profits does not necessarily mean that the price of whatever that company produces will go up BTW. Getting rid of corporate welfare for Big Oil just makes common sense...they don't need it in the first place...alternative energies do.

Try & get some of the coastal states to agree to "offshore drilling", and ANWR only contains about a few months worth of oil in it BTW. Drilling for more of a finite resource is only putting off the envitable...we need to get off the oil habit & fast!

Rebates - I am delighted to recieve mine as it will be used to pay for a small portion of my real estate taxes. Seems everything I own of value or earn is attached to paying into the tax base.

There is a lot of discussion every year about how to fix low income families. "Distribute more money to them to even out the thier personal defecit" - seems to be the common Government Cure Tactic.

The seed of poverty is undereducation in a society where technology is rapidly advancing to make products more efficient at a lower cost. Loss of jobs during this process results in less demand for products. Having three children when a couple can barely afford the food, clothing, supplies and childcare for one child is just stumps most of us. Is poverty truly just the lack of available jobs, or is it the lack of employable workers? Why not make college free for American Citizens? We have a shortage of nurses, engineers, glaziers, computer programers. How could it really harm us to have smarter people in this country? Better jobs, more money, better insurance coverage!

Maybe we should just print more money afterall.
